History of the Department

Historical information about the company and the prospects for the development of the organization
By the Decree of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan in 1993, a new specialty "Biotechnology" was opened at the Kazakh Chemical Technology Institute and in 1993 the first group of applicants was recruited for this specialty to study in the state and Russian languages.
Biotechnology is a new branch of science and production based on the use of biological processes and systems to obtain economically important products, create new varieties of plants, animal breeds, strains of microorganisms.
Today, biotechnologically, feed protein, the cell mass of bacteria, fungi and algae are obtained in large quantities, but at the lowest cost, insulin, growth hormone, interferon, blood clotting factors, monoclonal antibodies, immobilized enzymes, etc. are manufactured. Valuable renewable fuel sources are obtained by bioconversion of industrial and agricultural waste: alcohols, biogenic hydrocarbons, hydrogen.
Modern developments are aimed at creating waste-free technologies and searching for new active microorganisms that destroy polymers (polyethylene, polypropylene, PVC). The achievements of biotechnology are not limited to the above examples. It is safe to say that this is the science of the 21st century, since biotechnological processes are at the heart of the creation of modern knowledge-intensive, resource-saving and environmentally friendly industries.
A lot of effort, knowledge and energy was applied by the head of the Department of TEHP, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor M.S. Sataev, to solve all the issues of the newly opened specialty. At that time, the Department of TEHP was the first and only one throughout Kazakhstan, therefore, all working curricula and methodological documentation were compiled on the basis of the best practices of universities in the near and far abroad.
A huge contribution to the development of the specialty was made by associate professor, Ph.D. Prikhodko N.A. She led the work on the creation of educational and methodological and material-technical bases of the specialty, lecture courses were prepared in a short time, laboratory work was delivered, laboratories were equipped with new devices, apparatus, installations were created, boxing was equipped, the teaching staff improved their qualifications at leading enterprises of the region and in higher educational institutions of Kazakhstan.
In 1996, the department was headed by Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor K.S. Nadirov, a biochemical laboratory was organized and established under his leadership.
From 2005 to 2009, as well as from 2018 to 2020, the department was headed by the Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor B.S. Kedelbaev. During the period of his leadership, master's and doctoral studies in the specialty "Biotechnology" were opened at the department. The department has successfully passed the ASIIN international accreditation. The degree of the department has grown from 20% to 90%.
Since 2009, as well as from 2020 to 2021, the department was headed by PhD, Associate Professor Saparbekova A.A. As a result of successful ASIIN accreditation, the department confirmed that the educational program meets high quality standards. During the leadership of Saparbekova A.A., the scientific level and teaching staff of the department have grown significantly.
Currently, the department is headed by PhD, Associate Professor Alpamysova G.B. Under the guidance of the head of the department, joint work is being carried out with state institutions in order to train competitive qualified specialists who meet modern requirements.
Since the opening of the specialty, more than a hundred specialists trained by the department have been working at leading, promising enterprises of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Shymkent Vivo LLP, NGC Biotechnology, Kit & Co LLP, Himpharm JSC, dairy plants, oil and fat processing plants, wineries, distilleries, bio-processing plants and all food industry enterprises. Research organizations, research institutes and laboratories, SES, educational institutions, higher and secondary educational institutions, environmental authorities, biological wastewater treatment plants, agro-industrial complexes, etc.).
In the 2001 - 2002 academic year, the specialty 541230 was opened to prepare a bachelor of biotechnology. In 2001, specialty 120140 "Biotechnology" was transferred to the Faculty of "Oil and Gas Production and Processing", and in 2003 - to the newly organized agro-industrial faculty. Since that time, the department has been part of the Agro-Industrial Institute. Since 2011, the department has been part of the Faculty of Chemistry and Technology.
On August 28, 2014, by the decision of the Academic Council, the Higher School of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology was formed on the basis of the Faculty of Chemistry and Technology. Currently, the department is part of the Higher School of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology.
Over the years, the department has been updated and developed, expanding the areas of cooperation with enterprises of the southern region and other regions of Kazakhstan.
Currently, the department employs 2 Doctors of Sciences, 13 Candidates of Sciences (2 part-timers), 3 PhD doctors, 8 Masters of Sciences.
