History of the Department
The Department of "Metallurgy" was established in the SKU.I. M. Auezov in 2011. The basis for the creation of the department was the training at the university (in the former KAZKHTI) since 1964 of chemical engineers-technologists of electrothermal production, for enterprises producing phosphorus, calcium carbide, electrometallurgy.
The founder and the first head of the department "Metallurgy" was the candidate of technical Sciences Tleukulov Oryntai Mamutovich, a student of the academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR Ponomarev V. A. The number of students for the specialty in 1964 was 50 people. The first teachers of the department were Ananyev N. I., Kobzhasov A. K., Kravtsov P. M., Tultaev S. Zh.

In 2009, the department opened a bachelor's degree in the specialty 050709 - "Metallurgy", the first set was 48 people. Thanks to the efforts of V. M. Shevko and G. E. Karataeva, in 2014 the department opened a master's degree program in the specialty 6M070900 - "Metallurgy"and in 2020 a doctoral program in the specialty 8D07220-"Metallurgy". The department currently functions as part of the Higher School of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology. There are three levels of education - bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees.
Based on the accreditation of the bachelor's degree program 5B070900-Metallurgy conducted by NCAOKO, the specialty "Metallurgy" in the national rating took the 2nd place in 2019, 2018, 2017 and 2016, and the 3rd place - in 2015.
Specialty 6M070900 - "Metallurgy" in 2017 was successfully accredited by the Independent Kazakhstan Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NCAOKO). In the national rating of educational programs in 2018 and 2019, the specialty 6M070900 - " Metallurgy "took the 3rd place, and according to the results of the" National Rating of demand for universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan - 2018", conducted by the NAAR for educational programs, the specialty" Metallurgy " took the 2nd place in Kazakhstan.
The innovative educational program 8D07220-Metallurgy, is included in the register of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan with a coefficient of achievability of learning outcomes of 91.7%.
The first graduation of engineers in the technology of electrothermal production took place in 1969. The department has three forms of training: full-time, part-time and dual. In 2017, a branch of our department was opened for the first time at a large ferrous metallurgy enterprise, Ferrum-Vtor LLP (in 2020, the branch was closed). Since 2020, a branch of our department has been operating at the Shymkent Temir LLP plant.
Training of bachelors, masters and doctors is carried out according to the curriculum, agreed with employers, including a large enterprise of ferrous metallurgy in the south of Kazakhstan, Ferrum-Vtor LLP.
Since its foundation, the department has graduated more than 1,200 specialists, bachelors, master of technical sciences and PhD doctors. Among the graduates of the department are 28 doctors, including: Shevko V. M., Batkaev I. I., Batkaev R. I., Shakirov B. S., Zhantasov K. T., Tleuov A. S., Bakhov Zh. K., Anarbayev A. A., Aitkulov D. K., Kapsalyamov B. A., etc., 82 candidates of science and 7 masters.. Graduates of the department have led and are leading the largest industrial companies, corporations, universities: Shkarupov Yu. V., Donskikh D. K., Semenov V. V., Dzhusupov B., Berzhanov D. S., Biryukov Yu. I., Aitkulov D. K., Kapsalyamov B. A., Kalashnikov E. Ya., Tolukpaev B. Zh., Alimbekov O. Zh., Melnik M. A., Serzhanov G. M., etc.
The department has specialized laboratories (101, 102 office building No. 1 (A)), equipped with modern equipment and devices. Work is underway to update the material and technical base. To strengthen practical and research skills, students undergo practical training in the research laboratories (IRLIP and SAPA) of our University.
Also at the department there is a research laboratory "Advanced metallurgical technologies" which is engaged in the creation of theoretical and technological bases for the production of complex processing of substandard and unconventional natural raw materials and man-made waste, with the production of marketable products for various purposes.
In 2014, as an experimental project, the department introduced dual training on the basis of Ferrum-Vtor LLP in the specialty 5B070900-Metallurgy, which allows to improve the practical training of bachelor graduates with a focus on the future place of work. In the 2017-2018 academic year, experimental training in the dual form of the HT-15-2dk group (specialization "Ferrous Metallurgy") was continued in Ferrum-Vtor LLP.

Contracts for practical training with subsequent employment were signed with Shymkent Temir LLP and Shymkent Smelting LLP. There are also contracts for practical training at factories and enterprises: Ferrum Vtor LLP, Steklo LLP, Ata Metal LLP, WDA Company LLP, Kazakhmys Smelting LLP.
Recently, the places of work of graduates of bachelor-metallurgists are: Ferrum-Vtor LLP, Shymkent Smelting LLP, Shymkent Temir LLP, Steklo K LLP, Casting LLP, Karatau Kazatomprom LLP, Katko LLP, Aktau Ferroalloy Plant JSC, etc.
The Department has scientific relations with universities of the far and near abroad, as well as universities and research institutes of Kazakhstan: St. Petersburg Technical University, Siberian Federal University, Belarusian State Technological University (Minsk, Republic of Belarus), Branch of the RSE on the PCV "National Center for Complex Processing of Mineral Raw Materials of the Republic of Kazakhstan ""Zh. Abishev Chemical and Metallurgical Institute", S. Toraighyrov Pavlodar State University, K. Zhubanov Aktobe Regional State University, Ekibastuz Engineering and Technical Institute. K. I. Satpayeva, Karaganda State Industrial University (Temirtau), Zhezkazgan University named after O. A. Baikonurov. Thanks to the mutual agreement, students are exchanged, as well as foreign internships. The department effectively conducts scientific and methodological work on 9 agreements on cooperation with the CIS countries. For example, under a contract with the St. Petersburg State Technological Institute in 2015, work was carried out to obtain silicon grade 6N.
Interactive teaching methods are intensively implemented at the department. Virtual laboratory works were created (sintering of scheelite with soda and leaching of scheelite concentrate, converting copper matte, obtaining ferrosilicon of the FS 45 brand), 5 electronic textbooks on various specialties were written. 2 textbooks and 15 textbooks in the field of non-ferrous and ferrous metallurgy have been prepared.
State budget work at the Department of teaching Staff is carried out on the topic "Development of resource - and energy-saving technologies of metallurgical production".
The total amount of financing for 2014-2018 amounted to 91 million tenge. Sources of funding of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

2. Energy-saving technology for processing ferrophosphorus.
3. Development of a new integrated technology for deep processing of copper oxide ores to produce copper concentrate and ferroalloy smelting.
4. Waste-free technology for processing carbonate zinc-containing ores to produce ferroalloys, calcium carbide and zinc-containing sublimates.
5. Complex processing of tailings of the Balkhash processing plant.
6. Development of a method for the alumothermal production of silicon of "solar" purity (6N).

1. " Dynamics and stability of carbon nanotubes transmitting liquid»
The department has stable production relations: at the LLC "Kyrgyz Ferroalloy Plant" (Kyrgyzstan), LLP "Tau-Ken Temir" (Karaganda). The teachers of the department carried out applied work to optimize the technological and electrical modes of operation of electric furnaces at Gulsan LLP for the intensification of steel and ferroalloy smelting; at Steklo K LLP for the production of technical silicon and high-grade ferroalloy.
Most of the final year students are engaged in research work. As a result of their work, more than 60 publications were published, 3 author's certificates and a preliminary patent were obtained. Students take part in the republican contest of scientific papers and in the subject Olympiad. Among the winners are 8 students (Ganish H., Kamalbek D., Umarova Z., Kuraev R, etc.)
According to the results of scientific work, the department has published more than 160 scientific papers, including 3 monographs, 9 patents and copyright certificates. Published 40 articles in highly rated journals, including 16 with an impact factor and included in the database of Thomson Reuters, Scopus.
Among the teachers of the department, the Best teacher was awarded to: d.t.s., professor V. M. Shevko (2008 and 2018), Candidate of Technical Sciences, professor B. N. Kabylbekova (2009 and 2020). The department has a high scientific potential; about 80% of the teaching staff have academic degrees of doctors and candidates of sciences or masters.
Received a certificate and a medal of the Russian Academy - "Founder of the scientific school" - Shevko V. M. In 2017, professor Shevko V. M. was awarded the badge of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan "For merits in the development of science of the Republic of Kazakhstan".
On November 25, 2020, Shevko V. M. was awarded the diploma and the gold medal of P. Kapitsa for the discovery in the field of physical chemistry "The phenomenon of acceleration of the formation of iron silicides in the interaction of silicon oxide (IV) with carbon and iron". The discovery was established in the RSE "National Center for Integrated Processing of Mineral Raw Materials of the Republic of Kazakhstan" and in the NAO "South Kazakhstan University named after M. Auezov".
