On September 5, 2022, the departments "Chemical Technology of Inorganic Substances" and "Oil Refining and Petrochemistry" merged into one department "Technology of Inorganic and Petrochemical Industries" by order of the Academic Council of the M. Auezov University of South Kazakhstan.
The departments of "Chemical Technology of Inorganic Substances" and "Oil Refining and Petrochemistry" are among the oldest departments of the M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University, both departments were organized in 1962.
CTIS is one of the first departments in the Republic of Kazakhstan that have trained chemical engineers and technologists of a wide profile for the developing chemical industry on the basis of the largest Karatau deposit of phosphorites. Every year, the department trained more than 100 process engineers to provide the workforce of a new enterprise for the production of phosphorus and its compounds at the private enterprise "Phosphorus" in Shymkent.
In 1962, due to the need for specialists in the production of polymers, plastics processing, oil and gas, the Department "Technology of Plastic Masses" was opened at the Kazakh Chemical Technology Institute (KazCTI) (the department was headed by Mirfaizov H.M.), and in 1968 the department "Technology of oil and gas processing" (1968-1976 the department was headed by Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor Nadirov N.K.).
In the late 60s and early 70s, the development of Zhetybai, Uzen and other new oil and gas fields was started in Western Kazakhstan, and the Atyrau Oil Refinery began processing local raw materials. The first plants entered into operation of the operating enterprises: Guryev - a plant for the production of polyethylene and polypropylene, in Shevchenko - a plant for the production of polystyrene and various copolymers, which were the flagships of the plastics industry in the Republic.
At the request of production at the department, under the scientific guidance of Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor Nadirov N.K., research began in the following areas: "Catalytic cracking of kerosene-gas oil fractions of Mangyshlak oils", "Development of drilling fluids for oil wells", "Regeneration of sulfuric acid alkylation waste". This period was the beginning of the fruitful work of the department not only in educational, but also in scientific terms. At this time, graduate students, staff, faculty of the department began to actively conduct scientific research, the first scientific publications on oil refining, polymer processing appeared.
In 1997, due to the reorganization of the university structure, these two departments were merged into one department "Technology of oil, gas and Polymers. Since 2014, the department was renamed by the decision of the Academic Council of the University to "Oil Refining and Petrochemistry" (NPiNH).
And the first head and organizer of the new department of CTIS was associate professor A. S. Seitmagzimov, who headed the department in 1962-1974. In subsequent years, the department was headed by: 1974-1976 - V. K. Bishimbayev, 1980-1985 - G. Ya. Popova. In 2010, the Department of "Chemical Technology of Inorganic Substances" was joined by the Department of "Technology of Electrothermal Production".
1985-1988 The joint Department "Technology of Inorganic Substances" was headed by Tleukulov O. M., 1988-1991 - V. M. Shevko, 1991-2005 - Professor Moldabekov Sh. M., 2005-2006 - Shakirov B. S., 2006-2011 - Headed by V. B. Besterekov. In 2010, the Department of "Electrochemical Production Technology" was merged. This department was opened in 1963, the first head of the department was R. S. Vakhidov. Then the department was headed by Zhurinov M. Zh., Chechina O. N., Nauryzbayev M. K., Sataev M. S., Nadirov K. S.
The department has trained specialists in electrochemistry for Central Asia and Southern Russia. Since the establishment of the department, several hundred engineers have been trained. Among them are directors (presidents) of large enterprises of Kazakhstan A. I. Isaev, K. M. Azhmagambetov, Director of CJSC "Phosphorus", Ph.D. in Economics E. U. Zhumartbayev, director of the Zhambyl branch (GSFZ) LLP "Kazphosphate" L. H. Frangulidi.
In 2008, the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs "Chemical Technology of Organic Substances" were first internationally accredited by the ASIIN Agency (MoscowDusseldorf, Germany). According to the results of the international examination, a certificate was obtained that allows graduates to assign the Chemistry Eurobachelor label. In 2014 and 2019, CTOS and CTIS were reacredited.
In the 2010-2011 academic year, the Department of CTIS was headed by M. K. Zhekeev, in 2011-2014 - K. T. Zhantasov, 2014-2015 - E. N. Kocherov, 2015-2016 - M. Zh. Aitoreev headed, and from September 2016 to the present, the department is headed by Professor G. M. Seitmagzimova.
Over the years, the Department of CTIS has been modernized, improved, new specialties have been opened, the scope of cooperation with the southern region and other regions of Kazakhstan has been expanded. Since 1995, the department has opened the specialty "Chemical technology of explosives and pyrotechnics", in 2008 - "Nanotechnology" and "Nuclear chemical technology", in 2009 - "Membrane technology". Students study in three languages - the state, Russian and English.
Since the foundation of the department, more than 2,300 specialists, bachelors, masters and doctors of sciences have graduated. Among the graduates there are 20 doctors and 100 candidates of sciences, most of them are heads of large enterprises, rectors of universities, directors of research institutes, prominent scientists, leading production specialists:
General Director of Kazphosphate LLP Iskandirov M. Z., Ph.D., Director of the branch of the plant "Mineral fertilizers" of Kazphosphate LLP in Taraz Isaev T. A., D. I. N., Director of Syr-Tas LLP Alteev T. I.D., Professor D. S. Berzhanov, academicians of NAS M. Zh. Zhurinov, A. B. Baeshov. M. Zh. Zhurinov - first Rector, then President of the H. A. Yassaui Moscow State Technical University, President of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
In the specialty 05.17.01 - "Technology of inorganic substances", postgraduate and doctoral studies were successfully working until 2010, K. T. Zhantasov, N. S. Bazhirov, U. Besterkov, A. A. Anarbayev, I. I. Batkaev, A.V. Protopopov, D. K. Aitkulov, M.K. Zhekeev, T. A. Alteev, R. I. Batkaev defended their doctoral and more than 50 PhD theses of professors. Since 1995, a master's degree has been working at the department, since 2009- a PhD, 8 doctoral students have successfully defended their dissertations.
In 2015, the Department of "Technological Processes and Devices" with a high scientific and pedagogical potential in connection with the optimization of the structure was attached to the department of CTIS. Since 2004, the department has become the first at the university to teach English to students. 14 teachers of the department are the holders of the grant "The best university teacher". The department has a high scientific potential; 80% of the teaching staff have the degrees of Doctor and Candidate of Sciences or PhD. Teachers take an active part in competitions of scientific projects for grant funding. Conducts contract research with enterprises of the Republic of Kazakhstan and international educational projects Erasmus+.
The Department " Technology of Inorganic and Petrochemical Industries " occupies a leading position in the republican ranking of bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs, annually conducted by the independent agency for quality assurance in education NAOKO.
