At present, the Department of Oil Refining and Petrochemistry is one of the leading departments of M.Auezov SKU. Over the years of its existence, the department has invariably occupied a leading position at the university in the educational process and research activities. The quality of educational programs implemented at the department confirms the leading positions of educational programs in the national ratings of educational programs in Kazakhstan.
Improving the quality of the educational process at the department is achieved by: a multi-level system of training specialists: bachelor's, master's, doctoral studies; a high level of graduation of the teaching staff; a high level of information support for educational and scientific work; the introduction of innovative teaching methods; active involvement of employers in the development and implementation of educational programs; participation of students in research work, etc.
The educational activities of the Oil Refining and Petrochemistry department are focused on training specialists for the oil refining and petrochemical industries. The department prepares bachelors, masters, PhD doctors in educational programs:
6В07170-Chemical Technology of Organic Substances (bachelor's degree)
6В07172-Oil and Gas Processing Technology (Bachelor's Degree)
6В07173-Technology of the production and processing of polymers (bachelor's degree)
6В07271-Technology of pharmaceuticals and perfumery and cosmetics (bachelor's degree)
7M07170-Chemical technology of organic substances (Master's degree, 2 years)
7M07173-Petrochemistry (Master's degree, 2 years)
7M07176-Technology of oil and gas processing (Master's degree, 2 years)
8D07170-Chemical technology of organic substances (doctoral studies)
8D07171-Petrochemistry (doctoral studies)
8D07172-Oil and Gas Processing Technology (Doctorate)
The goals and objectives of educational programs are formulated taking into account the requirements and requests of employers. Programs with reduced and accelerated training periods are being implemented. The high quality of the educational program is confirmed by the accreditation of educational programs 6В07170-Chemical Technology of Organic Substances (bachelor's degree), 7M07170-Chemical technology of organic substances (Master's degree, 2 years) (German agency ASIIN (Accreditation Agency Specialized in Accrediting Degree Programs in Engineering, Informatics, the Natural Sciences and Mathematics),7М07173-Petrochemistry (Master's degree), and 8D07170 -Chemical technology of organic substances (doctoral studies) (Independent Agency for Quality Assurance in Education). And a lot is being done at the department today to ensure that the level of training of specialists is not inferior to the level of graduates of the world's leading graduates. For this, both theoretical and worthy practical components are especially important. The department has created all the necessary conditions for fundamental, applied, research and development work, as well as for innovation. The research work of the department has an innovative focus and is devoted to research in the field of oil refining and petrochemistry.
7 laboratories are assigned to the Oil Refining and Petrochemistry department, which are equipped with laboratory instruments: a catalytic cracking unit with a fixed catalyst bed and an ARN-2 oil rectification apparatus, a number of instruments for analyzing petroleum products, PD320 660/660 rollers, an RDE 800x800 vulcanization press, an injection molding machine, a batch coking unit , penetrometer PNB-01, octane meter SX-200, apparatus DB-150 for determining the extensibility of petroleum bitumen, automatic analyzer of the fractional composition of petroleum products AFSA-1, gas analyzer KGA, compressors, drying cabinets, muffle furnace, meter of low-temperature indicators of petroleum products with the computer program MX- 700, aniline point analyzer AT-PKhP, automatic apparatus for determining the relative viscosity VUN-20, rectifier VU-24, electronic analytical and technical scales Ohaus, etc. The material and technical base of the department is updated annually. In 2020-2021 academic year devices for determining low-temperature indicators of petroleum products MX-700-50 with a computer program, for measuring the number of melt index of polymers MeltFlowIndexer, a pH meter of the PHS-25 type, viscometer NDJ-1 were purchased. All laboratories are equipped with interactive whiteboards for conducting classes in an interactive mode: virtual laboratory work, demonstration of video lectures, viewing of e-books, demonstration of presentation material, multimedia files on a large screen.
The department is constantly expanding innovative educational, scientific and production activities on the basis of enterprises and organizations. So on the basis of Ecoshina LLP; PetroKazakhstanOilProducts LLP; LLP "Hill-corporation", there are educational-scientific-production complexes (ESPC); on the basis of LLP "Hill-corporation" there is a branch of the department.
The most important principle of organizing the educational process here is the organic combination of training and education of students with professional development at basic enterprises within the framework of scientific and industrial practice. Industrial practice of students is carried out at the leading petrochemical and oil refining enterprises of the Republic of Kazakhstan, such as LLP "PetroKazakhstanOilProducts" (Shymkent); Atyrau Oil Refinery LLP (Atyrau); LLP "Shymkent plant of polypropylene products", LLP "Ekoshina", LLP "Triumph", LLP "Neftekhimstroy-Yug"; Hill-corporation LLP: Russian State University of Oil and Gas named after I.M. Gubkin; State Unitary Enterprise Institute of Petrochemical Refining (Ufa, Bashkortostan), "Kazakhstan Petrochemical Industries Inc." and etc.
The department practices the defense of graduation projects and works at the bases of enterprises in a public form, in the presence of students, scientific leaders and representatives of enterprises. Representatives of leading scientific organizations and universities are invited to the meetings of the certification commission as chairman or members of the commission. Graduates of the department confirm the high quality of training at the final state certification, as well as during the defense of diploma projects and works, master's and doctoral dissertations.
Students of the department are winners of competitions and conferences of republican and regional significance: Republican subject Olympiad in ChTOS; competition NIRS MES RK; competition RUMS MES RK on ChTOS; become holders of personal scholarships.
For the effective implementation of the educational program, improvement of educational and methodological work, training and advanced training of scientific and pedagogical personnel, the department cooperates with the leading universities of the CIS: Ufa State Oil Technical University (Russia, Ufa); GPU "Institute of Petrochemical Refining" of the Republic of Bashkortostan (Russia, Ufa); Sakharov International State Ecological Institute (Minsk, Belarus), Kazan National Research Technological University (Russia, Kazan), Kuban State Technological University, Samara State Technical University.
Within the framework of the CIS Network University, there are programs for the preparation of masters in the educational programs "Oil Refining Technology" (Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas), "Chemical Technology of Fuel and Gas" (Kuban State Technological University); "Technology of oil and gas processing" (Samara State Technical University).
The department pays great attention to the work on strengthening international communication and academic mobility of students. Academic mobility has become an integral part of modern education. Every year, students of the department under the program of academic mobility are trained at the Prague Institute of Chemical Technology (Czech Republic) and in universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The Department of Oil Refining and Petrochemistry has a School of Oil Engineering. The educational program at the School is carried out by the faculty of the department, specialists from the CIS and non-CIS countries are invited, including engineers and managers from leading companies in the oil and gas sector of Kazakhstan. School format: master classes in the laboratories of the university and on the industrial site of the city's enterprises. Participants of the School of Petroleum Engineering have the opportunity to get acquainted with modern technologies in the field of oil refining and petrochemistry; work on mini-projects formulated by teachers or proposed as ideas by the participants themselves, and defend the results of the project at the final competition
